So sign-ups for 50states_spn are happily going on right now. It's the kind of challenge I love, but alas, I'm not American. Of course I'm aware that you don't strictly have to be American in order to participate, but this comm got me thinking. And I thought it would be awesome if there was something like that for the rest of the world as well.

It would be a great opportunity for us non-American SPN fans to indroduce our respective countries, say, "Hey, this is the place I come from!" and maybe even get the boys off the continent for a bit.

But I fear it might be only me. So my question goes to all you non-Americans out there, as well as Americans who feel like writing about foreign places/myths/customs etc.: Would any of you actually participate if I pulled up a challenge like that?

I think this is a great idea! It's a bit tricky, because Sam & Dean are so quintessentially American - there's something that feels slightly wrong about them leaving the country, you know? But it's canon, they've been to Scotland and Canada, so why not?

I do want to write for this, despite not being strictly American. But my grandparents were, and I've spent time in their state, so close enough, right? :)

But I love the idea of a local-folklore challenge that brought in fans from all over the globe, I think it would be very fun.

The all-over-the-globe thing is exactly what tempts me so much here. I think it would be awesome.

And while it would be nice to see the guys in an entirely unfamiliar environment, there could also be stories about a random Russian/Chinese/Spanish/Whetever monster randomly migrating to the US. As long as its origin is somehow important...

I'm already thinking about rules. I just realised that I'd really like to do this!

So, you're Canadian? (Going my your profile information.) That's awesome! I bet Canada has a lot of cool things to write about!

I am! Though part of my family is American, so I'm going to do the 50_states thing *g*

But there are tons of things I'd love to do with them in Canada (needing to hide out from the FBI, maybe!), and there are so many fans from around the world - I'd love to see them in Germany. Or Japan, or Brazil, or Spain, or just hunting things from anywhere that have ended up in the US.

You know what, I actually might.

(Psst! You could do both! :P)

I'm not sure what Sam and Dean would get up to in the English Midlands, though there are rumours that the cinema I work in is haunted...

If Sam and Dean don't find a reason to go there, there are always other characters less afraid of flying/teleporting/possessing people in the English Midlands.

<3 Crowley.

Unfortunately I have difficulty writing any fic that doesn't include Dean, so my brain has moved onto the question of why Crowley has dragged Dean to England...

Obviously, Crowley is very concerned about the guests of your local cinema!

Genuinely LOLing right now.

It's definitely an interesting idea and full of so many possibilities. It's hard for me to picture the boys outside the US even though they've traveled to other countries briefly, but I love the idea of introducing the world to the American based fandom.

Go for it! It sounds like a lot of fun.

It wouldn't even have to be in another country, strictly speaking (though I think that would be interesting).
And it wouldn't have to be the boys. There are other characters who are less phobic when it comes to travelling.

Damn, I wish I knew how to write because this is a seriously awesome idea!! I would give anything to read about Sam and Dean giving chase to the famous Black Dog of "El Escorial".

Just in case you're wondering, King Philipp II of Spain was haunted by a Black Dog all his life. He saw it everywhere so he constructed this palace/monastery in a magical point, living locked in it, and gathering thousand of holy relics to protect himself and also buying the disturbing Hell's paintings of Hieronymus Bosch. Finally the Black Dog managed to enter the palace and Phillip II died in a really painfully and drawn out way screaming he was seeing it (much like Dean's death!). Now it's said that both the black dog and Phillip II's soul are still in there (there has been a lot of sightings along the centuries) and "El Escorial" is considereded the Hell's Mouth!! It's a really nice and wonderful black legend, huh?

Anyway, I hope you do go ahead with this challenge! I'm sure there are a lot of talented authors out there who also want to internationalize the Winchester Bros!

That's a really cool legend! If I was Spanish I'd write about it!

...are you sure you can't write? Not even a little? :P

Anyway, I think you might just have convinced me to do this.

It shows I'm a sucker for ghost stories and legends, huh? I really really wish I could write, my school teacher liked my essays and said I had good imagination, but my "execution" left a lot to be desired, so she wasn't fond of my creative writing... (and that was in spanish! In english I must be flat awful!).

But I *can* see why the bros would go to another country. For example that "pick a hemisphere" line? Sam could take it literally!

I say go for it. There are A LOT of legends and hauntings in Europe for example (I bet more than in USA because we have the stories of castles from the medieval ages or even the magic prehistoric ruins!) that are really cool! And as you said, it could also be about inmigrants monsters, like the scarecrow episode... so many possibilities!
Sep. 10th, 2011 10:52 pm (UTC)
You could write in the stye on an essay! Like, the "The most awesome day of my life" type of school essay, in which some kid tells about visiting that castle and seeing the dog and the ghost and the guys who got rid of them.

Since you clearly know how to handle words, maybe your teacher wasn't completely right about it.

And writing in a different language can actually be easier. It is for me.

Hahaha! Don't try to tempt me! I don't think I have the courage to write either. Too much respect for the people who actually knows what they are doing...

If I ever get the inspiration to write, though, I promise you'll be the first one to know!
Sep. 10th, 2011 11:22 pm (UTC)
How would you feel about a collaboration? You write a detailed outline, I put it into pretty words?

You see, I kind of really want to get you to write! :P
Sep. 11th, 2011 01:11 am (UTC)
ARGH! I... don't know. As much as it draws me, the idea of writing scares me A LOT, to be honest, but let me think about it okay? I don't even have a plot for the fic of how to believable bring them to Spain... and probably if I think something it wouldn't even be original. Would you help me with plot points if I had problems?

And on other side, Dean & Sam voices are incredibly difficult and I'm not ocurrent or ironic or funny! Yep, I'm freaking out a little... because I can't think on anything more difficult that writing Supernatural Canon (and in other country!). It's going to be a huge dissappoint me to you.

I still haven't said yes, though. Just, I'm thinking about it and I'll get back to you.
Sep. 11th, 2011 08:53 am (UTC)
Don't worry about it. Serisouly. You know how I overcame those insecurities back in the day? By just writing what I wanted and telling myself I was never going to show it to another person.

And really, I wouldn't be disappointed, even if it really was not that great. I'd be delighted you're trying and help you where I can!

Of course I'd help you with the plot points! With the dialogues, too. If we decide to seriously consider this, we should sit down in front of the Skyp-chat window some day and have a brainstorming session.
